Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME generic top-level extension is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered 3rd-level domain names remained online.
